FEDERAL MINISTRY FOR EDUCATION, ARTS AND CULTURE
categories: foundations / funding / residencies / stipends /

The Arts division of the Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur manages Austria’s national fund for the arts. Every Bundesland (or region) has its own cultural fund, but the federal ministry is the most important. It stimulates and supports residencies, awards and institutions by a significant amount of funds.

In the ‘Ausschreibungeb’ section on the website you will find a list of current calls for applications, Austrian as well as international. The support of individual artists is complemented by a wide range of scholarships, awards and cooperation with institutions, like gallery Fotohof in Salzburg and photography journals such as Camera Austria International or Eikon.

Combined with the collection of the county of Salzburg, the national collection is made up of the Austrian Gallery of Photography, presented at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg. The collection exists of over 1.600 photographs; individual works as well as studies and series. The extensive collection boasts documentary, conceptual as well as experimental photography from both established artists and emerging talent, spanning a subject range from 1950s photojournalistic work to activism and today's diverse artistic positions. An important part of the collection is formed by photographic documents of the 1960s activism around people like Mühl, Schwarzkogler, Brus and Nitsch. Another section is made up by classic, journalistic documentary photography, such as work by Inge Morath, Franz Hubmann, Erich Lessing, Ernst Haas and Harry Weber.

The collection’s most recent purchases can be viewed online.
