Basis Wien is a documentation centre, archive and database on contemporary art from Austria. Data on more than 56729 people, 12857 institutions, 41673 exhibitions/projects and 54185 objects (pictures, exhibition folders books, etc.) are available online. basis wien was established to serve the Viennese artist community by documenting artists work and keeping track on everything that is published on Austrian artists, as well as biographies, exhibitions, museum catalogues, press releases etc.

With basis edition, basis wien helps emerging artists by publishing their first monograph. Artists can send in their proposal for a publication, which will be executed and paid for by basis wien.

Other projects include European programs for the digitalisation of art.

All employees have a background in humanities, with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art, plus a degree in IT.
