http://nmz.hr/ The National Museum of Zadar exists of several galleries, each specialising in a different subject. The Galerija Umjetnina (Gallery of Arts) houses the museum’s photography collection.

From very early on, Zadar has been an important centre of Croatian photography. This is reflected in the museum’s collection, comprising around 1670 works. The Art Gallery has organised the Triennial called ‘Man and the Sea’ since 1957.

The collection of photographs from the 19th century exists for a large part of cartes de visite made by the famous Buratta Thomas, but also by other photographers (Mattiazzija, Buchwald, Moretti, Hunger).

Furthermore, the collection contains photographs of the ship Titanic, originating from the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Belfast. A large collection of negatives by the legendary Brkan brothers is also available. These siblings were at the head of the informal school of photography in Zadar. Another, large part of the collection is made up by artistic and romantic photography.
