The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam collects and presents modern and contemporary art and design, to inform and inspire wide and varied audiences locally, nationally and internationally. It combines the roles of traditional museum and platform for the contemporary visual arts, acting in the cultural and social context of Amsterdam and on the basis of its own rich and unique collections, through a multi-faceted program of exhibitions and other activities.

The Stedelijk Museum is currently being renovated and expanded. The reopening is planned for the second half of 2011.
The Stedelijk’s original 1895 building on the Museumplein is currently undergoing a major restoration. The museum will also be expanded with a spectacular new building, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architecten. The whole operation will give the museum considerable extra space and enable it to present more of its famous collection than ever before.

Publications and a new website are also in the pipeline, so that the Stedelijk will be the place to see classic modern and contemporary art: a platform for deeper understanding, exciting new ideas, events and encounters.

Ann Goldstein is director of the museum.

Hripsimé Visser is curator photography for the Stedelijk Museum and board member of the Nederlands Fotogenootschap
