The Henri Cartier-Bresson Award is a prize awarded by the Henri Cartier Bresson Foundation to stimulate a photographer’s creativity by offering the opportunity to carry out a project that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.

It is intended for a photographer who has already completed a significant body of work; a talented photographer in the emerging phase of his or her career, with an approach close to reportage. The 30.000 euros prize is awarded every other year.

Eighteen months after receiving the prize, the winner exhibits his or her work at the Foundation HCB in Paris and gets a catalogue published.

There is no age restriction and all nationalities are welcome. But candidates have to be nominated by an institution: museums, photographic societies, photo agencies, art schools, universities, galleries, magazines, festivals and publishers are entitled to nominate. Application forms can be downloaded from the website.

The prize was initiated by Robert Delpire, publisher. Previous winners include David Goldblatt and Jim Goldberg.
